Corona Times Life at Wingify Wingtern

Wingtern Diary – Vaishnavi writes about her remote internship at Wingify

June 26, 2020

When the country lockdown due to coronavirus outbreak was in full fledge leading to unprecedented mass layoffs in many companies, almost shattering my hopes of summer internship this year, it was then Wingify happened to me and I’m so glad it did.

My name is Vaishnavi Singh, a sophomore at IIT Roorkee, and I was a part of Wingify as a Data Science remote intern this summer.

In these uncertain times when ‘firing’ is more common than ‘hiring’, Wingify stood true to its commitment of granting me the internship. It was so overwhelming to see that Wingify offered me the internship just the next day after my interview. Although my onboarding was virtual but it wasn’t impersonal, I was warmly welcomed by all and I was so moved by that.

Talking about my project, it was heatmap prediction for web pages. The goal of the project was that given a screenshot of a website, we have to predict the heatmap of that website. This was done using a deep learning pix2pix model and in the end, we were able to get a generalized model that worked fairly well. Initially the work seemed daunting to me as I had no prior experience of working with deep learning models and computer vision, I had a basic knowledge of Machine Learning at that time. It was such an amazing learning experience for me.

Also, I would like to take a moment and thank the team for making this journey possible.

A big thanks to my mentor Divyanshu Kalra for everything, from showing faith in me and supporting me during this journey. This has been such an enriching experience for me. It was a seamless virtual onboarding in these tough times. A big shout out to my co-intern Sourabh Pandey, who guided me at every step during this internship. I would like to be connected with the team in future.

This is a snapshot of my slack. This is sadly the only picture I have from my first internship.

I’ve always heard fun internship anecdotes from various resources but mine is completely a different one. Unfortunately, I wasn’t entitled to the traditional perks of the internship, visiting the Wingify office, bonding with each and every one of you, and sharing mutual camaraderie. Although I never met you people but I’ve seen you guys bond over the virtual meetups, Friday events, engineering standups, celebrating 10 years of Wingify and I absolutely adore that.

I really appreciate the fact that even in such challenging times, Wingify stood for its employees, initiated virtual fun activities to keep boredom at bay and get the best out of Wingifighters. Not only that I’m so ecstatic to see Wingifighters despite of hovering uncertainties over their lives are contributing tirelessly to the company. I’m so grateful to be a part of this community. I wish all the success and luck to everyone and hope to visit Wingify office someday.

Thanks Wingify for having me!😃
